Certified, Notarized, or Sworn — What Contracts Typically Need

These terms get used interchangeably, but they aren't the same thing, and the receiving agency usually cares about the difference:

Certified translation
A signed Certificate of Accuracy from the translator attesting the translation is complete and accurate. This is what USCIS, most U.S. courts, and most U.S. government agencies require.
Notarized translation
A notary public witnesses the translator sign the Certificate of Accuracy and applies their official seal. Notarization verifies the identity of the signer, not the accuracy of the translation. Some courts, banks, and foreign consulates specifically require this.
Sworn translation
In many European and Latin American countries, only a translator who has taken an oath before a court is authorized to produce a legally valid translation. If your document is going to a country outside the U.S., check whether it requires a sworn translator rather than a U.S.-style certified translation.

Most courts, government agencies, and business counterparties accept a certified translation with no notarization. Some foreign registries, banks, or government filings request notarization instead, so confirm with the receiving party before you order.

When a Translated Contract Gets Requested

A translated, certified legal contract usually gets requested when a court, government agency, or counterparty needs to review the terms in English. Two of the most common situations:

Contracts Are Structured Differently by Legal System — We Translate Them As Executed

A common-law contract with numbered clauses and lettered exhibits, a civil-law contract drafted before a notario with formal recitals, a bilingual side-by-side agreement, and a contract with schedules or annexes attached all follow different structures. We translate the complete executed document, including every exhibit, schedule, and signature block, exactly as it stands, without reorganizing it into a different format.

Sample certified translation documents

Your certified translation is delivered as a digital PDF with an official Certificate of Translation Accuracy, signed and stamped by the translator and Cloud Translate. We apply basic formatting to keep it readable, but we do not replicate the design of your source document.

What's In Every Order

  • Every clause, exhibit, schedule, and defined term translated in full, not summarized
  • Defined terms and numbered clause references translated the same way everywhere they appear, not paraphrased differently section to section
  • A signed Certificate of Accuracy naming the translator and their qualifications
  • A print-ready PDF by email, with notarized hard copies available by mail
  • Confidential handling of commercial and financial terms, with access limited to the translators and reviewers working on your order

How It Works

From upload to certified PDF in four steps.

  1. Upload a clear photo or scan of the contract, including any exhibits, schedules, or annexes.

  2. Get a free quote and choose standard, expedited, or same-day delivery.

  3. A professional translator experienced with legal and commercial documents completes the translation; a second linguist checks defined terms and numbered clause references for consistency before delivery.

  4. Review your translation, request any free revisions, and receive the final certified PDF, with notarization and hard-copy mail available.

How long does a certified legal contract translation take?

Most certified contract translations are completed within 24–48 hours. Expedited and same-day delivery are available for an additional fee when you're working against a closing, filing, or negotiation deadline.

Will my translated contract be accepted by a court or government agency?

Yes. Every translation includes a signed Certificate of Accuracy that meets the standard most courts, government agencies, and business counterparties expect. If it's ever rejected on accuracy grounds, we'll correct it at no additional cost.

Can you review the contract terms or give a legal opinion on them?

No. We translate the contract exactly as written; we don't review, interpret, or advise on its legal terms. For legal advice on the contract itself, you'll want an attorney licensed where it's being enforced.

Can one of the parties to the contract translate it themselves?

Most courts and counterparties require the translator to be a disinterested third party with no stake in the agreement, not either signing party or their relative. A translation from an interested party is typically rejected.

Do I need a notarized translation or a certified translation of the contract?

Most courts and government agencies only require a certified translation, not a notarized one. Some foreign registries, banks, or filings require notarization instead. Tell us where it's being used and we'll confirm before you order.

Is my contract's commercial and financial information kept confidential?

Yes. We treat every contract as containing sensitive commercial information, limit access to the translators and reviewers working on your order, and don't retain files longer than necessary to complete and support your order.

Who certifies a legal contract translation?

A professional translator experienced with legal and commercial documents completes the translation and signs a Certificate of Accuracy attesting that it is a complete and accurate rendering of the original contract.

How much does a legal contract translation cost?

Standard certified translation is $18 per page. Expedited (rush) translation is $28 per page. Notarization is available as an add-on for $9 per document.
