Notarization adds a notary's signature and stamp to your translation's Certificate of Accuracy. Whether you actually need it depends on where your document is going, for some uses it's optional, for others it's effectively required. This page covers both.
What Notarization Actually Does
A notary confirms the identity of the person who signed your Certificate of Accuracy, that's what gets notarized. It doesn't certify the accuracy of the translation itself, that's what the Certificate of Accuracy states and what our 100% Acceptance Guarantee already covers.

Do You Actually Need It?
For USCIS submissions: no, it isn't required. USCIS's own requirement under 8 CFR 103.2(b)(3) is the translator's certification of accuracy and competency, not notarization. Some other organizations handling the same document occasionally ask for it separately, so it's available if you need it. See our USCIS Certified Translation page for the full requirement.
For IRCC (Canada) submissions: effectively, yes, if your translator isn't a certified member of a Canadian provincial or territorial translators' association. IRCC requires a sworn affidavit in that case, which has to be sworn before a commissioner authorized to administer oaths, in practice, notarization. See our IRCC Certified Translation page for the full requirement.

Pricing & Availability
$9 per order, added to Certified Translation. Notarization applies to the Certificate of Accuracy issued with certified translation, so it isn't available for Standard Translation or AI-Assisted Translation, neither of which includes a Certificate of Accuracy to notarize. A notary's signature and stamp are recognized across all 50 U.S. states.
Questions & Answers
Frequently asked questions.
The questions people ask before ordering notarization services.
What does notarization actually notarize?
The signature on your translation's Certificate of Accuracy, confirming the identity of the person who signed it. It doesn't certify the accuracy of the translation itself, that's what the Certificate of Accuracy and our 100% Acceptance Guarantee already cover.
Does USCIS require notarization?
No. USCIS's requirement under 8 CFR 103.2(b)(3) is the translator's own certification of accuracy and competency; notarization isn't part of that requirement. See our USCIS Certified Translation page for the full details.
Then why would I need it?
Some employers, schools, or other organizations handling the same translated document occasionally ask for a notarized version for their own separate purposes, even when the receiving agency itself doesn't require it. If you're not sure whether you need it, ask whoever is requesting your document, or contact us and we'll help you figure it out.
Is it required for IRCC (Canada) submissions?
Effectively, yes, if your translator isn't a certified member of a Canadian provincial or territorial translators' association. In that case, IRCC requires a sworn affidavit from the translator, sworn before a commissioner authorized to administer oaths, which in practice means notarization. See our IRCC Certified Translation page for the full requirement.
Is a notarized translation valid in every state?
Yes, a notary's signature and stamp are recognized across all 50 states; notarization isn't a state-specific certification the way some professional licenses are.
How much does it cost and how long does it take?
$9 per order, added to your certified translation. It doesn't add meaningfully to your turnaround time in most cases, since it's completed alongside your translation rather than as a separate later step.
Is notarization available for standard (non-certified) translation?
No. Notarization applies to the signed Certificate of Accuracy issued with certified translation, so it isn't available as an add-on to standard translation.
