Certified, Notarized, Sworn — What Do You Actually Need?
These terms get used interchangeably, but they aren't the same thing, and the receiving agency usually cares about the difference:
- Certified translation
- A signed Certificate of Accuracy from the translator attesting the translation is complete and accurate. This is what USCIS, most U.S. courts, and most U.S. government agencies require.
- Notarized translation
- A notary public witnesses the translator sign the Certificate of Accuracy and applies their official seal. Notarization verifies the identity of the signer, not the accuracy of the translation. Some courts, banks, and foreign consulates specifically require this.
- Sworn translation
- In many European and Latin American countries, only a translator who has taken an oath before a court is authorized to produce a legally valid translation. If your document is going to a country outside the U.S., check whether it requires a sworn translator rather than a U.S.-style certified translation.
USCIS accepts a certified translation with no notarization required, which matters most for affidavit-of-support filings (Form I-864) that require tax return evidence. Some lenders or foreign agencies request notarization instead, so confirm with the receiving party before you order.

Tax Forms Vary by Country — We've Seen Them All
A U.S. Form 1040, a UK Self Assessment return, an Indian ITR filing, and a Latin American declaración de impuestos all use different structures, line-item labels, and supporting schedules. Some arrive as government e-filing printouts, others as accountant-prepared summaries. Our translators are experienced with all of these formats and preserve the original layout, line items, and totals rather than producing a generic reformatted summary.
Who Needs a Certified Tax Return Translation
A certified tax return translation is required whenever you submit a foreign-language tax return as financial evidence to a government agency, lender, or immigration case. Common situations include:

Questions & Answers
Frequently asked questions.
The questions people ask before ordering a tax return translation.
How long does a certified tax return translation take?
Most certified tax return translations are completed within 24–48 hours. Expedited and same-day delivery are available for an additional fee when you're working against a filing or interview deadline.
Will my translated tax return be accepted by USCIS?
Yes. Every translation includes a signed Certificate of Accuracy that meets USCIS requirements under 8 CFR 103.2(b)(3), including for Form I-864 affidavit-of-support filings that require tax return evidence. If it's ever rejected on accuracy grounds, we'll correct it at no additional cost.
Do I need a notarized translation or a certified translation of my tax return?
USCIS only requires a certified translation, not a notarized one. Some lenders or foreign agencies require notarization instead. Tell us where it's going and we'll confirm which one you need before you order.
Can my accountant or a bilingual family member translate the tax return instead?
No. Most agencies, including USCIS, require the translator to be a disinterested third party, not you, your accountant, or a relative. A translation from someone connected to the filing is typically rejected.
Do you translate every line item and schedule, or just the summary totals?
We translate everything on the page: every line item, schedule, and supporting form, not just the final totals. Agencies reviewing financial evidence usually want the full detail intact.
Can you add or correct information that's missing or wrong on the original return?
No. A certified translation must be a complete, accurate rendering of the original document exactly as filed. If there's an error on the return itself, that needs to be corrected through an amended filing before translation.
Who certifies a tax return translation?
A professional translator completes the translation and signs a Certificate of Accuracy attesting that it is a complete and accurate rendering of the original return. This certification is accepted by USCIS and most government offices.
Can you translate tax returns from any country?
Yes, from over 100 languages, including Spanish, Portuguese, Arabic, Mandarin, Vietnamese, French, Russian, and Hindi, by native speakers familiar with tax and financial terminology.
